SAN DIEGO HOSPICE SERVICES
Personal care can protect comfort, dignity, and familiar routines when everyday tasks become harder.

When illness makes daily routines tiring or unsafe, even simple personal care can become stressful. A hospice aide brings practical help while paying attention to the patient’s preferences and comfort.
Depending on the plan of care, an aide may help with:
The aide follows the written care plan. If the patient develops new pain, breathing changes, skin problems, or another clinical concern, the aide reports it to the hospice nurse.
Good personal care respects privacy, culture, routines, and the patient’s choices. Families can tell the team what helps the patient feel safe and comfortable.
The hospice nurse assesses the patient’s needs and helps set the aide schedule. The plan may change if the patient’s strength, mobility, symptoms, skin, or living situation changes.
Before the first visit, the team explains what the aide will do and what supplies should be available. Families can share preferred routines, safe transfer methods, and any concerns about privacy or comfort.
Hospice aide care is not continuous private-duty caregiving. Family members or other caregivers still provide day-to-day supervision between visits. The aide’s role is a defined part of the coordinated hospice plan.
Personal care involves trust. Aides often learn the small details that make a patient more comfortable, such as the right water temperature, a familiar grooming routine, or the best pace for care.
In this Suncrest video, a hospice aide talks about the lasting impact of this work. It is a short look at why skill, patience, and human connection all matter during hands-on care.
A hospice aide provides personal care included in the patient’s plan, such as help with bathing, grooming, dressing, repositioning, and other daily comfort needs under clinical supervision.
No. A hospice aide provides scheduled services defined by the hospice plan of care. The aide does not replace a family’s round-the-clock caregiver or provide unrelated household services.
Hospice aide services are coordinated with and supervised by the hospice clinical team. The aide reports changes and concerns to the nurse.
Hospice aide services may be provided where the patient lives when they are included in the plan and coordinated with the facility’s staff.
